Diesel Fuel Water Separators

Inside any engine there are dozens of parts that work together to make it move. Each part has a job to do and each one is important. In the diesel engine, one part is often overlooked but plays an important role in making sure the engine runs efficiently and delivers plenty of power. The diesel fuel water separator makes sure that only clean, pure fuel is sent to the engine. It is a filter that removes water and solid contaminants from the diesel fuel before it reaches the fuel pump.

Why Is That Important?

When fuel contains a lot of water, it wears off the lubricants from the fuel injectors. The lubricants keep the injectors working flawlessly and moving without causing friction. Excessive friction creates heat and begins to wear down the parts. By removing the contaminants and water, diesel fuel water separators prevent the engine from getting clogged with solid material. Clean fuel means the engine is running more efficiently, burning less fuel, giving off fewer emissions, and likely to last longer.

How Do They Work?

The majority of fuel water separators are made from aluminum, and they come in a variety of sizes. There is a separator for every type of diesel engine. Fuel separators must be drained, and smaller ones need it more often because they don’t have as much capacity to hold the liquid. Diesel fuel usually has more water in it than gasoline, and if unfiltered, the water—combined with sediment—decreases engine efficiency.

Fuel and water separators collect filtered water within the engine for disposal later on during maintenance. The first stage of the fuel water separator uses a pleated paper element to change water particles into large drops that will fall to a water sump at the bottom the filter. The second stage is made of silicone-treated nylon that acts as a safety device to prevent remaining particles of water from passing into the engine. Most separators have an internal sensor that lets you know when the water level is getting high and needs removal.
